Elaine
Snyderman's chronicle is a must-read for patients and families traveling
the "reluctant journey" after a cancer diagnosis.
She provides valuable and heartfelt insight into the life of a
multiple myeloma patient, and provides an accurate view of the
life-altering experiences that she and her family faced.
It is both heart wrenching and heart-warming, while continuously
reminding us of the most important things in life:
family, friends and faith. Roberta McCarty, President, McCarty Cancer Foundation In “Alien on a Familiar Planet: Remembering”, Elaine shares her personal myeloma journey, a
heartwarming account of its impact on her own life, feelings, and values,
as well as those of her family and friends.
In her tragic sadness as an “alien” diagnosed with incurable
cancer, she exemplifies heroic courage and strength as she finds new
meaning, joy, and gratitude for family, friends, and health.
Her willingness to selflessly and openly share her journey provides
an invaluable example of hope and zest for life for other patients on
their own journeys, as well as an inspiration to caregivers everywhere.
She reminds all of us to celebrate, cherish, and be grateful for
the gifts and joys of life. Elaine Snyderman’s gripping
account of her “alien” journey as she battles myeloma and embraces
life is an inspiring must read for both myeloma patients and their family
members. Her third person narrative allows her to examine her plight
dispassionately and yet with humor and warmth.
This is one patient’s book that doesn’t require a box of
tissues; instead we find ourselves cheering her on. This is the history of one
courageous and loving individual pressed roughly up against the edifice of
a malignant disease. It tells the story of how she rose up against that
impenetrable fate, carrying her family and her community with her as she
did. As I read “Alien on a Familiar
Planet: Remembering” I
couldn’t help but make the correlation between Elaine’s journey and my
own – from the fear and uncertainty of a diagnosis of a rare and
incurable cancer to the hope, support and kindness that comes unselfishly,
and sometimes unexpectedly, from family, friends, and strangers who become
friends. Elaine’s
willingness to share her experiences, on both an intellectual and
emotional level, captures the essence of her being and one that all cancer
patients can relate to. She provides readers a glimpse of life as an
“Alien” through the highs and lows of a journey that continues to
shape who she is and the profound impact she has on those around her.
Elaine reminds us all to live for today, cherish your loved ones,
appreciate what you have and been given and be thankful for “every
tomorrow.”
