Frequently Asked Questions

The following questions and answers should provide additional guidance for potential Culpeper Biomedical Initiative Grantees.

Q:  What is the term of the award?

A: 12 months.  

Q: What is the policy on Facilities & Administrative (F/A) costs?

A: Up to 8% of the $25,000 grant may be applied to F/A costs.  The 8% is not in addition to the $25,000, and the total budget for the grant, including F/A cannot exceed $25,000.

Q: What is the maximum award amount?

A: $25,000

Q: Are there restrictions on expenditures?

A: Funds can only be used as specified in the grant proposal.  Funds should be used primarily for salaries, research materials, and direct expenses.  A small amount of each grant can be used for publication, travel and F/A.  Part of the grant selection process involves a review of the bidget, and how the funds will be spent directly pursuing the research objectives.

Q: What are the requirements for financial reporting?

A: Clear and specific budgets are due with the proposal.  Final financial reports are due within 30 days of end of the grant period.

Q: What is the purpose of including "specific quarterly aims and goals" in the proposal and can you provide an example? 

A: The quarterly aims and goals are designed to help the Selection Committee determine if the project can be completed in a one year time frame.  Please click here to see an example from a prior approved Pilot Grant. 

Q: What is the policy regarding carry-forward? 

A: There is no carry-forward, as this is a one year award.

Q: What is the policy regarding unexpended funds?  Do unexpended funds need to be returned to the agency?

A: All unexpended funds must be returned to Goldman Philanthropic Partnerships.

Q: What are the requirements for progress reporting?

A: We require a final narrative report within 30 days of end of the grant program.

Q:  Is this open to graduate students? Are grants available to Ph.D. students and post-docs as well as principal investigators?

A: Grants are available to Ph.D. students and post-docs as well as principal investigators.

Q: When must a proposal be received to be considered for the June 2005 review?

A: All complete proposals received in our office by May 13th, 2005 will be considered for the June 2005 Review. 

Q: Is there a page limit for the CV, such as there is for other funding agencies "Biosketches"?

A: No, there is no page limit for the CV.  

Q: What percentage of the proposals for the Culpeper Biomedical Pilot Initiative grant get funded?

A: We select 3-4 a quarter usually.  The percentage depends on how many applicants we receive for this quarter.  We typically receive between 30-50 grant proposals per quarter.

Q: Do you recommend to send in a preliminary letter of inquiry for an initial approach or should I send in a full proposal right away?

A: A letter of inquiry is not required for the Charles E. Culpeper Biomedical Pilot Initiative.  Please submit the complete proposal for review.

Q: Will a  non-US. citizen be eligible to apply this grant? Do you require specific citizenship of the applicants, say US citizenship or Permanent Residency?

A: Yes, a non-U.S. citizen will be eligible for the pilot grant program.

Q: Who should I address the letter(s) of support to?

A:  Please address the letter of support to Dr. Bruce E. Bloom.

Q: Do you have a list of what kinds of projects you have funded?

Q: Is there a  formal application that I would need to submit?

A: No, there is no formal application that you need to submit.  All of the necessary proposal requirements can be found on our website at www.4cures.org

Q: Do you want an electronic copy of the proposal as part of our submittal?

A: We do not require an electronic copy of the proposal as part of your submittal.

Q: Is a CV and information about other funding support required only for the principal investigator or for all consultants on the project?

A:  A CV and information is required for both the principal investigator and other consultants (researchers) on the project.

Q:  Must my institution provide a matching $25,000 for the project?

A:  No, it is not required that your institution provide a matching $25,000 for the project.

Q: When will be the starting date of funding period for the September reviewing meeting

A: It is our intent to have funds distributed in mid October.

Q: I was awarded a biomedical pilot grant last year. Is there a process for which I can apply for an extension to continue this work?

A: You may apply for the Culpeper Biomedical Pilot grant again in order to be considered to receive a second year of funding.  Your application will be considered against the other applications for that period.  Please provide whatever data you have gathered, and also indicate what other sources of funding you have applied for and/or received.  In addition, please include anything that you have published about your research.
