Charles E. Culpeper Scholarships in Medical Science
The Charles E. Culpeper Scholarships in Medical Science were established to nurture the career development of exceptionally promising, young academic physicians.  The scholarships provide a three-year award of $324,000 to support the work of a physician-scientist with outstanding potential who is committed to a career in academic medicine.  It is intended that, at the conclusion of the scholarship, the Scholar will be firmly established and funded as an independent investigator in a university or other research organization.

Applicants must have graduated from medical school within the past eight years and also completed at least one year of post-doctoral clinical training.  Those who have progressed beyond the rank of assistant professor are not eligible.   The award funds both salary and core research expenses.  All scientific research relevant to human health is eligible for consideration; research that has relevance to cures for human disease is highly encouraged.

Currently, three  Scholars are selected annually.  Candidates must apply through the medical schools with which they are affiliated.  Each school is permitted to nominate only one individual.

In 2003, the Fund received 35 qualifying  applications for the Scholarship period.  They were read and evaluated by the Scholarship program's Scientific Advisory Committee during the early fall, and final decisions were made by the end of the year.
