| PROJECT TITLE | Using acupuncture to treat Herpes |
| CATEGORY | Virus management, Acupuncture |
| PROJECT DESCRIPTION |
The
type of herpes virus that causes cold sores lives in the nerve ganglia
of the body, shielded from the body's normal defense mechanism.
Some anti-viral drugs will reduce the extent of a herpes outbreak, but
do not reduce the frequency of the outbreaks.
The objective of this proposed pilot study is to identify whether acupuncture may prevent herpes virus outbreaks. Initial data are promising, and confirmation through this project could lead to a safe and inexpensive preventive therapy for a disease that has no other cure. |
