NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO LEAD GOLDMAN PHILANTHROPIC PARTNERSHIPS

February, 2002 NORTHBROOK, IL—The Goldman Philanthropic Partnerships announced that Bruce E. Bloom, DDS, JD, will lead the new foundation as Executive Director. The Partnerships is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation dedicated to seeking out innovative research and treatments for cancer and other catastrophic diseases and funding these pioneering projects.

“We are very pleased that Dr. Bloom brings his extensive business and clinical background to our foundation, and we know that he will be the driving force in helping advance groundbreaking research projects to fight deadly cancers,” said Chairman George N. Goldman, who co-founded the Partnerships with his wife, Judith, the organization’s current president . The Goldmans, who are Chicago entrepreneurs, established the Partnerships after Judith’s battle against multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer that has been in remission for more than a decade. Together, the Goldmans continue to build a new foundation designed to develop research funding partnerships between their foundation, innovative investigators and other dedicated philanthropists.

In his role as Executive Director, Dr. Bloom will be instrumental in forging new partnerships with research institutions, nonprofits, governmental organizations, and the business community. “I am very pleased to be working with such a dedicated and talented team to drive the vision of our founders to advance unique treatments for catastrophic diseases,” said Dr. Bloom. “As we develop a validated portfolio of scientific projects, we plan to energize donors so they can not only target their funds to specific groundbreaking cancer projects, but also join researchers as they travel down the road of discovery to new treatments.”

During more than 20 years of his combined business and healthcare experience, Dr. Bloom has been involved in a wide array of career endeavors involving law, dentistry, clinical research, insurance, entrepreneurial enterprises, regulatory affairs, product development, and other ventures. Prior to joining the Partnerships, Dr. Bloom was the Senior Vice President-Healthcare Professional Liability at Kemper Casualty Company, a $3 billion insurer headquartered in Long Grove, Illinois. While leading startup operations for the Healthcare Liability Division, he developed and managed cutting edge marketing and sales programs designed to impact B2B and B2C e-commerce and other non-traditional initiatives.

While working with one of the top five casualty insurers in the nation, the CNA Insurance Companies in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Bloom held positions as Director of Loss Control, Vice President and ultimately as the Senior Vice President of CNA HealthPro. In this last position, Dr. Bloom directed sales and marketing programs and held operational responsibility for the $200 million National Programs Business Unit, which included a with a staff of more than 100. He also was instrumental in implementing a number of innovative insurance industry programs and financial partnerships designed to leverage risk and assure profitability.

During his tenure as Director, Professional Relations and Clinical Affairs, at Bausch and Lomb Oral Care Division in Tucker, Georgia, he worked with senior management on a range of multi-million dollar projects involving regulatory affairs, product development, clinical research and professional relations. As the only healthcare professional in the Oral Care Division, Dr. Bloom played a pivotal role in managing professional sales and marketing training for company employees in the United States and European countries. He also served as Bausch and Lomb’s chief liaison to the American Dental Association and other professional organizations, and managed their Board of Science Advisors.

He launched his entrepreneurial career while founding the Midwest Dental Examiners, a division of American Dental Examiners, which is a national dental indemnity insurance consulting firm headquartered in New York City. Dr. Bloom also was the Chief Dental Resident at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, and he maintained a clinical practice in Chicago until the late 1980s.

Dr. Bloom holds a Juris Doctor degree from Chicago Kent College of Law, a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from University of Illinois Medical Center, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from University of Illinois. He is married and the father of two children.
